5 Reasons to Head Back to Base

I realized recently that I haven’t written very much about Villahermosa. Part of that is because I like being on the rig so much more than being at my Company's Base here in Villahermosa. However there are some perks of being in civilization. Here are my top 5 reasons to head back to base:

  1. Hot water in a real shower –It’s not that I don’t have hot water on the rig. I just have to choose between washing my hair all the way clean or conditioning my hair. There’s just not enough hot water for both! Also, RV shower. Not exactly luxurious. And, I have to share with boys. Eww.
  2. Food magically appears at your door – Some rigs I have to feed myself. Other rigs I get fed. Either way, there’s not a huge amount of choice involved. I eat what’s in front of me, plus whatever junk food I’ve smuggled with me. In town, everything is a phone call and 20 minutes of ‘Por favor, hables más despacio y le dices otro vez’ away from my doorstep.
  3. The opportunity to wear real clothes – I don’t even bother to bring real clothes with me to the rig. I live in gym shorts and white t-shirts under my coveralls. It’s comfortable for sure, but it gets old after a while.
  4. Beer – Really, I’m not a huge drinker. I mean, I never thought it would be a big deal to go a month without a beer. And it’s not, most of the time. But after a day where you spend 12 hours in the hot sun running up and down the stairs to the drill floor, nothing sounds better than a cold beer after shift. Thus, making a cold beer after getting from a job the ultimate treat.
  5.  Being around other women – I've never been a huge girly-girl. In fact for most of my life I've gotten along better with boys than with girls. Still, that doesn't mean I particularly enjoy the 30 to 1 ratio I’m usually subjected to. Sometimes it’s nice not to get watched all the time. Also, nice to get hit on all the time. Admittedly, being back at the base doesn't necessarily solve that problem.
So there you have it. The reasons I come back to Villahermosa. There are others, but these are the small things I look forward to that I never thought about prior to my new life style.
